As the sun began to set, the green of Ireland lined up against the
orange of a motley group of Indians who seemed to be taking the 'big
match' very seriously. The density of crowd began to increase with every
minute. The Irish gals waved the tricolours and chanted the names of
various JSS players. The match kicked off and the eagerness of the
Indians was demonstrated with an audacious acrobatic overhead kick which
grazed Delia O Malley's cross bar. However it was Dylan Walshe's
opportunistic strike that put the Irish ahead after only five minutes.
The Indians however equalised with ruthless urgency and the game was all
level at the half time break. The Indians were playing at a very high
intensity and the Irish were going to have to adapt to their style of
play if they were going to have any chance of securing a result. Before
we knew it the Indians went 2-1 ahead after a mix up in the Irish defence. But Adam Kelly struck back moments later to level it up again.
Another stroke of luck allowed the Indians to get back in the lead but
the JSS boys were not going to go down without a fight. Jordan, Andrew,
Dylan, Amandeep and Sean Harrison all began to cause havoc up front but
the Indians again caught us on the break to make it 4-2 with 12min to
go. As the Irish surged forward in the hope of restoring some pride, it
was the men in orange, not green, who would have the final say with a
fine strike to end the game with a 5-2 score-line. And so it finished
with the 1000 or so spectators congratulating their fellow countrymen.
The Irish were gracious in defeat. The sounds of olé olé reverberated
throughout the Sunderbans and both sides headed for home.
