An Irish and Indian Heart

As we arrived in Kolkata we were greeted by an old, warm-hearted, strong woman is giving us her hospitality for the next few weeks.

This woman is Sister Cyril, a Loreto Order nun originally from Bray in Co. Wicklow she is allowing us to stay in her school, which is part of her legacy. Her legacy of setting up schools for children of all social backgrounds whether they can afford it or not including those who live on the streets, called Rainbow Children.

For her 50 years of education in India and social work that has helped the lives of thousands, she has been bestowed with a very high honour in this country- The Padma Shri. To put that in perspective a past recipient of the award is Nelson Mandela. It is the equivalent of an OBE in Great Britain or a Person Of The Year award in Ireland.

By coincidence it was on the very day we arrived that she received the telegram from regional Governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi (grandson of Mahatma Gandhi himself)

Well done Jonathan. It's great to hear from you and I'm sure Sister Cyril was delighted that all the work she's doing has been recognised.

We all really miss you and hope the rest of your time in India goes really well.
