Indyahh! A Blog by Hannah Charlton

“Oh-mi-gawd,ladsh, we're in Indyahh!”
The battle-cry of the 25 new English teachers of Jharkali raises excitement and dust clouds. Word of advice to soon-to-be-4th-Years: Bring no white. Hand-washing white tops when there's dirt trapped the very molecules brings only heartache and wrinkled hands.

Despite having no great student loans and less than twenty ear piercings each, 24 D4 students and 1 English one are spending a portion of their doss- sorry, gap -year teaching hundreds and hundreds of primary-school children in the remote village of Jharkali – and we're loving it. Teamed up in boy-girl pairs and assigned a bilingual girl from our partner school, Loretto School Sealdah, we ventured forth to a land of no Coke-Zero, no Uggs and no Wi-fi.

Even though a few bumps on the road have occurred (namely burst tyres on a 4 hour bus journey, too many potholes with not enough suspension and falling off the back of tuktuks) us hardy JSS students have persevered and taken to teaching like we were born singing the Hokey Pokey. Sun, swimming and 13 people and all their stuff living in a room built to comfortably fit 8 for two weeks certainly makes you bond with others and in my opinion – we tight, yo. I'm loving it here and I'm not the only one.

But, seriously, goys, Wi-fi next time, yah?
