Thoughts from J.D.!!!

Hi there,

Its Jonathan here typing from a computer room in the Loreto day school, surprisingly a bit more kitted out then the ole library in JSS. The experience so far has been amazing, and I still have to pinch myself occasionally because the whole country seems to be on a different planet altogether.

The streets are probably the most shocking part of the experience, with no bins; the roadside is always piled up with litter, allowing dogs to eat the scraps and the odd homeless person. I could go on for hours about how dirty the place is but it’s easier to discuss the positives.

The rainbow children in the school are always smiling, laughing and playing despite the things they lack in life. Most of them have no parents and are found on the streets or stroll in through the always open front gates of the school.

The building project was amazing and gave everybody such a good feeling to see the school come to near completion on the last day of work. The highlight of Diamond Harbor was probably the big football game between India and Ireland on our second last day there, which you probably know we won!! There were around 1,000 people watching with speakers blaring the voice of the local commentator. All players, big Dan Alex’, Peter, Mark, Eoin, Kevin, Andrew, Adam, Seosamh, and myself, gave it our all to finish 2-1 up.

That’s all I have to say for the moment, were off to Bankura tomorrow to start our second building project.

I’ll write again soon.

Bye,

Jonathan D.

Jonathan. Good to see all the photos and read the reports. They give a great sense of how it is there. Saw you in lots of pictures, looking well. I believe it's the jungle next, much more isolated. Even further away from luxuries.
Michelle's birthday yesterday. Rachel is travelling up the east coast of Australia on Tuesday.
Keep in touch.
