Life in Kolkata

Kolkata is amazing. We arrived on Wednesday 16th of January, after a really long and exhausting flight. As soon as we stepped out of the airport, the humid warm air hit us. We were informed that this was actually winter for the Indians!

A rather interesting bus came to pick us up, and before we knew it, we had set off to the Loreto Day School. The bus ride was long, but it didn't really matter as we were all so swept up in the bizarre mixture of beauty and poverty in the streets. We passed many sights you'd never ever see in Dublin... India has market stalls running along the sides of the street, and so it really isn't unusual to see things like chickens being slaughtered, and such like..

Before we knew it, we had arrived to the school. As soon as we hopped off the bus, there were children legging it up to us and taking our hands, and calling us 'Auntie' and 'Uncle', and asking us to be their friends. We were quick to adapt to the behaviour of the kids, and have picked up a lot of their games so far. The kids are all very bright, and most had quite a high standard of English. They are amazing to be around and great fun to talk to and play with.

The thing that struck me most about Kolkata is the behaviour of the people. The children in the school are so friendly, and everyone is so welcoming. This trip is certainly shaping up to be an amazing experience!

Lia,
It sounds like you have really thrown yourself straight into it. Give the teachers, girls and boys my best wishes. School has become remarkably quieter since you all left! Seriously though, enjoy and make the most of your time there, it will end very soon. Lots of love,
