Creating Community Support

From John Alexander May 1st

Today we had several high level meetings with local community leaders. First Eamonn Keogh, a member of our adult team and a Garda superintendent came with me to visit Jharkhali police station, a large dirty pink building on the approach to the town. We were graciously received by 6 constables and an inspector who admitted they had little to do as there was little crime.

The second high level meeting was perhaps more significant. We met the Protan (mayor), Dilip Momdal, along with  several of the teachers. Dilip is head of the Revolutionary Socialist Party and rules the area during his five year tenure.

We pressed on him the need for the school to have more teachers (presently just 6 for 330 pupils) and also discussed ways John Scottus and Loreto Sealdah can continue their support without necessarily committing large scale funding.

Working to give these children opportunities for a better life

I see education as the real vehicle for hope. An educated mind is resourceful and resilient in many ways, so I admire your efforts for the continuity of this project that aims at getting hope and opening possibilities for these Indian children, but certainly also to largely enriching the hearts and minds of your students. It is a winning situation in both directions.
A big hug from Spain to the whole TEAM.
