Description of School Project

Lanchipur School 4/2/2010
We are building an intermediate secondary school for the village boys and girls from 12 years old to 16. They will then be able to sit their first board exam (Junior Cert) and have the chance to get a decent job or go on to do the final Board Exam (Leving Cert) when they are 18.
At present there are 76 young people who are very keen to have the school built and get on with their schooling. The nearest government secondary school is over six miles away and there are no school busses.
In the photographs and video clips you will see and hear various aspects of our work on the site. The local people support us as best they can, supplying some of our food and sending their children to carry bricks or sand. Mostly they are 12 or 13 so they haven’t yet joined in the working teams.
With all this help and with the great enthusiasm of John Scottus students the brickwork was almost complete after four days of work. The next thing, and one of the toughest jobs, was to mix and pour concrete for the pillars. Today we are starting on the floors and roof, the best we have ever got towards final completion
The spirit on the site is matchless. Everyone is doing their best, even though the increasing heat and the tummy troubles slow a few from time to time. But we have had no serious problems and everyone is happy, cooperative and hard working. The tradition of diligence and good cheer that previous groups from JSS have brought to this project lives on and we work in the proud knowledge that we are furthering a good cause with this our eighth building scheme.
